Mother’s Day Pictures | Family Photographer in Syracuse

So you've booked your Motherhood Mini Session, but now you have to style you and your kiddos. If you're like me, I always assume I will be able to throw something together for the whole family at the last minute. Spoiler alert. It never happens that way. So let me take some of the stress off of you and give you a few ideas to help you get started!

I always hold my Motherhood sessions in springtime and that time of the year is notorious for bright, almost neon colors. I love looking at it all and spotting the the pops of color in my garden, but wearing equally bright and neon colors will make you almost disappear into your surroundings. So my first tip is to not wearing any super bright colors (that goes for my other sessions too). The thing about wearing bright colors is, they will cast that color back onto your skin and therefore you'll start having shades of green or shades of neon pink on your skin. Probably not the color you want to be in your photos.

Here is a nice color palette for a spring time mini session in which the colors don't over power each other. You'll want to stay away from a lot of greens, because again, the greens are out in full force, and if you're wearing green as well, you're not going to pop off the image. And that's what we want, you and your sweet littles to pop! I have lots of neutrals in these outfits to ground the whole palette as well as some pinks that will compliment the green surroundings. I love the idea of tall socks for little girls, because they can get away with dresses and not be too cold. And on that note, you could easily add a nice cream sweater or cardigan to any of these outfits for more texture and layers. You'll want layering options for your outfits, because you never know what spring time in Illinois will look like. Some days it's cold, some warm, so having layers will ensure your outfits transition well with the temperature fluctuations!

This next inspiration board again has neutrals grounding it, but has more blues and a hint of green in that second top option for mom. These are more laid back outfits, but still have an elevated feel. When we style your session, I want this wardrobe to be something you feel comfortable in and something that you would normally love to wear. With that being said, having your photos done is a special moment and you should feel special too! So think of your own style and then kick it up a notch. Like if you were going to a shower or a nice family dinner. This idea for a young boy (easily translated into an old tween or teenager) is on the casual side, but the joggers and hooded corduroy take it to the next level. If you're not a dress loving momma, then these options are perfect for you! A jump suit is so comfy and yet dressy enough that you feel put together. And there are so many great options out there! I know I said stay away from green, but I couldn't help myself! I'm in love with this floral top, and I think we're okay with the greens because: 1. It's a softer green, and 2. the blues and browns ground it and mute the green even more. You're not going to disappear in the green grasses in this top. I would say, though, I would pair it with some trendy flare jeans or cropped dark or black denim. That way, you're pulling in the neutrals and not veering off course too much with the colors.

Wether you absolutely love wearing dresses or you are more of a casual dresser, there are so many options out there for you to choose from. I offer styling with all of my sessions, and we can easily put together some options that will make you feel so confident and ready to rock your mini session!

So remember these rules when you're choosing outfits for your mini session:

  1. Try to stay away from bright colors, especially bright green

  2. Mix lots of neutrals into your color palette

  3. Choose 2 or 3 colors to stick with and find subtle ways to bring those in

  4. Layers and accessories are your friends!

  5. Mix florals, textures, and solids to give yourself a cohesive look!

And that's it! Hopefully this helps you get off to a great start picking the wardrobe for your spring minis. If you would love to chat about what I've chosen or have any ideas that would go with these inspo boards, make sure you comment so we can put it all together! I can't wait to help you build your wardrobes!
